Dodecalis Luminarium

Architects of Air

Dodecalis Luminarium is the work designed by Alan and Meko Parkinson of Architects Of Air, presented on the occasion of the Pop Air exhibition presented in Madrid in 2023. An immersive installation that invites the viewer to enter another dimension. Dodecalis Luminarium is a path in which to lose yourself and be amazed by the beauty of this new world you have entered, governed by mathematical and geometric rules. It is a place of contemplation, discovery and wonder. The main feature are its 3 “Dodecadomes,” Dodecalis Luminarium also features a Tree, impressive in its convolutions, and a magnificent Main Dome.

The ground-level faces of the pentagon allow easy passage to the tunnels that extend from its base, and the asymmetry of the dome serves to disorient the visitor so as to make exploration more exciting. Dodecalis Luminarium presents the latest evolution of the dodecahedral dome at its most exciting manifestation, with a dazzling tracery of light lines animating the three Dodecadomes.

The Tree and the main Dodecalis Dome both take up the neon tracing motif to maximize intrigue and wonder.

Biography

Founder, designer and artistic director Alan Parkinson first started experimenting with pneumatic sculptures in the I980s and has since developed his own language of form in this plastic medium. Alan Parkinson’s intention is to stimulate visitors to a sense of wonder to the beauty of light and colour, and create an environment where the visitor’s experience is influenced by their own relation to space. From the Guggenheim in Spain to the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the monumental and interactive walk-in sculptures of Architects of Air and designed by Alan Parkinson, have astounded audiences across the globe. Architects of Air has toured the luminaria since 1992 and visited 43 countries. The luminarium offers a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes where Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals meld into an inspiring monument to the beauty of light and colour, and where visitors can happily loose themselves. The installation awakens all the senses, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment for all ages. Visitors are transported and immersed into an amazing world of light and subtle and saturated hues, for a unique sensory experience, and brings visual art in places where you wouldn’t expect it.
