The interactive installation by Karina Smigla- Bobinski presented for the first time at the Pop Air exhibition in Milan in 2022 is called POLYHEADRA.
The title is a play on words that combines the word POLYHEDRA, referred to three-dimensional geometric shapes (‘poly’ meaning many and ‘hedron’ base), and the word HEAD (head) resulting in the idea that there are many minds contributing to this work. All the opinions and ideas that come out of the many minds of the participants continually reformulate the composition of this collective work or, in other words, an open-source work of art. The idea is based on the self-configuration processes in nature, such as the selfs-configuration of the brain.
In this installation, in fact, visitors can configure the artwork themselves. POLYHEADRA is intended for precisely that, a room filled with tubes of varying sizes and lengths with magnets placed strategically along the body and at its ends, asking the participants to create continuous and collaborative formations by connecting the tubes to each other, attaching them to the walls, and hanging them from the ceiling. The work is therefore also collaborative, with participants working together to create their own installations within the room.
The artist encourages increasingly audacious arrangements that ultimately lead to the contents of the entire room collapsing to the ground, symbolizing life where pieces may tumble, leaving it to us to gather and reassemble them.
